Fall 2020 Recap

Writer: kumortarboardkumortarboard

It certainly was an unusual fall semester at KU! While we weren’t able to do many in-person activities and gatherings, chapter meetings and activities on Zoom helped us all to stay connected. We had a speed-dating Zoom event so that members of our chapter could get to know each other digitally. People were split up into groups, given a few prompts to get the conversation flowing, and got to talking from there! It was quite fun and a great way to hang out with people while staying healthily socially distant.

Also, in October we were able to organize a fundraiser for Mortar Board through Chipotle. This was a really fun way to help raise money for the chapter, and because it was a percentage night there was a little bit of enjoyable pressure to bring in at least $150 to get a cut of the proceeds.

Lastly, while meeting in person was a challenge, during chapter meetings and online messaging, several members of the chapter were able to come up with and organize some really exciting community service events. Two really amazing virtual community service events were when Muriel Lund helped to organize a mask-making service event and when Emily Krichati organized an event where students campus-wide were able to write letters to seniors who are residents of long-term Alzheimer’s care facilities. While both of these events were held online, they both helped members of the chapter to stay involved in the community even during a global pandemic.

While quarantine measures are still in place here at KU and the spring semester looks to be equally unprecedented, our chapter has certainly shown that we can and will still serve our community however we can. Here’s to spring 2021!
