Fall 2019 Recap

Writer: kumortarboardkumortarboard

As the fall 2019 semester comes to an end, Torch chapter reflects on our time spent with Mortar Board. We are very proud of what we have achieved this past semester (and what we will achieve in the coming months!). We are looking forward to what the spring semester will bring, including a professional headshot event, our perch project (we are SO excited to work with Audio Reader Network!), Mortar Board week, membership selection for the next Torch chapter member class, as well as continued fundraising efforts and social events.

Emily (Vice President) attended the Mortar Board National Conference in Little Rock, AR August 7-9 and came back with a TON of great ideas and input from other chapters. In September, Torch chapters attended a potluck dinner with alumni. Odalis (Membership/Selection Chair) has been hard at work preparing for selection and advertising the application (which is linked on this website - see "Apply" on the main page). The Outstanding Educator award was presented in December as the last official Mortar Board event of the semester. Chapter meetings, which occurred the first Monday of each month, were productive, informative, and a fantastic avenue to continue to get to know fellow members. Check out a few of these events in detail below.

Alumni Dinner

On Sunday, September 15, Mortar Board alumni graciously welcomed Torch chapter members to a lasagna dinner. We are so grateful for their hospitality and kindness and are excited for the next alumni event! We had such a wonderful time spending time with alumni and cherish the pearls of wisdom we gleaned from these fantastic, accomplished women.

Outstanding Educator Award

Jennifer Harrison was presented the Outstanding Educator award by Torch chapter members and Outstanding Educator chairs Emily Sattem and Kait Flannagan at the University of Kansas men's basketball game on December 10. In addition to teaching business law, Dr. Harrison is the director of the Business Leadership Program and the Jack Dicus Business Honors Program. Admired by so many KU students and Mortar Board members, she is more than deserving of this award!
