Fall 2021 Recap

Writer: kumortarboardkumortarboard

What a great start to the year! With classes back in-person this year, we've been able to do some events in-person (masked up, of course) and some via Zoom for safety and convenience.

First Meeting & Icebreakers

We kicked off the year with an in-person meeting and some ice breakers in Capitol Federal Hall. In the above picture, our Chapter President, Madeline Elliot, leads the first meeting. Exec members had the chance to introduce themselves, and everyone played "Four Corners," where people group up in each corner of the room based on their answer to a prompt, introduce each other, and chat. We got to know about where everyone was from, what majors they were, favorite types of movies, and more from this fun game!

Ice Cream/Movie Social

In October, our Social Chair, Gracie Schmidt, organized an Ice Cream and Root Beer Float Social in the Union for our members to get to know each other better and relax with a movie. We had a quick meeting with updates before the social and then enjoyed ice cream while watching Halloweentown on the projector.

Habitat for Humanity Donations

As an opportunity for members to reach their service hours requirement and give back to the community, our Service Chair Paul Samberg and Mortar Board member/KU Habitat for Humanity President Emily Hull agreed that donating five items to KU Habitat's Winter Kit Drive could count as one service hour. Our chapter ended up contributing three boxes of donations, totaling to $80!

Rest of Fall 2021

With finals sneaking up on us and lots going on with our members, the rest of the Mortar Board meetings were conducted on Zoom. Our last meeting for the fall semester was on December 5 so everyone could focus on finals.

We look forward to what the spring semester has in stock! Graduation is only five months away, and I'm sure these next months will be packed with more fun events, study nights, and volunteering in Mortar Board. See you in 2022!
